Insert an external video

When working in the Oxygen-based editor, you can insert links to videos that aren't stored in Inspire as long as there is a valid URL to the video's location. This lets you display the video file in Oxygen without importing the video file into Inspire. The video is also included whenever you take an action on the topic, such as when publishing.

Tips and tricks

  • For external videos, Oxygen saves the video as an object element, with the video file name in the data attribute and an outputclass attribute of video.
    • For example:

      <object data="http://UTF-8#kpvalbx=_XtWRZN_SMZGB0PEP_8a16A8_39" outputclass="video"/>

    • You must use a valid URL that has 2000 characters or less. Otherwise, you will see an error message.
  • You must have permission to use the URL. If the URL is restricted or locked, the video won't play.
  • If you want to manage a video in Inspire, you can import it and then reference it.
  • You can't insert an external video using drag and drop.

To insert an external image:

  1. From the top menu click Components.
  2. In the Folders pane, open the folder that contains the document you want to add an image to.
  3. In the Components pane, select the document, right-click it, and then select Edit...
  4. In the editor, put your cursor where you want to insert the video.
  5. From the toolbar, select the Video menu, and then select External video.
  6. On the Enter video url screen:
    1. Place your cursor in URL, and do one of the following:
      • Select a URL from your history
      • Enter the URL that uses 2000 characters or less.
      • Paste the URL that uses 2000 characters or less.
    2. Select Insert.
Result: You see a video object.
You may have to Save and Submit, and then re-open the topic to view the initial screen of the video or play it. You can use playback controls to watch the video in the Oxygen editor.
If you don't have permission to use the URL, (it's restricted or locked) the video won't play.
  7. In the toolbar, do one of the following:
    • To save your changes locally and keep working in the document in Oxygen, click Oxygen_save Save.
    • To save your changes to the database and close the document, click Save and Submit.
