Add a placeholder to a map

When you're organizing topics into a map's hierarchy, you can add references to topics that you know you need but don't want to created yet.

To add a placeholder to a map:

  1. Click Components.
  2. In the Folders pane, navigate to the map that you want to update.
  3. On the Components pane, right-click the map component and then select Edit...
  4. In the map content pane, place your cursor where you want to insert a reference.

By default, you see a Display mode of Topic titles.

    • You can go to the toolbar and select the Display mode option to change the view.
    • If you select View Topic References and leave it on that mode when you save or close the map, the next time you open it, all the references in the map are expanded for you.
    • If you select View Topic Content and leave it on that mode when you save or close the map, the next time you open it all the references in the map are collapsed due to memory and performance concerns.
  5. To add a placeholder for a topic reference, do one of the following:
    • To add a topic at the same level (as a sibling node), right-click the Map element, and then select Insert after, Topic Reference, and Empty.
    • To add a topic underneath and indented to the right (as a child node), right-click the Map element, and then select Append child, Topic Reference, and Empty.
  6. In the center pane, a new entry exists called </> Topic Reference.
  7. In the toolbar, do one of the following:
    • To save your changes locally and keep working, click Oxygen_save Save .
    • To save your changes to the database and close the map, click Save and Submit.

Resolving an empty topic reference (placeholders)

If you've added any empty topic references, to form a map that's valid you either need to go back and specify a topic or delete the empty reference.

To add a reference to a placeholder:

  1. In the center pane, select the empty </> Topic Reference.
  2. On the Attributes pane, select HREF, and then click Action_Menu the Options menu.
  3. To create a new topic that doesn't exist yet, select New...
Note: To finish creating a new topic:

    2. In Available Templates, select what type of structure your content needs.
    3. In New Component Name, enter a title for the component in 100 characters or less.
